The phrase “the writing on the wall” is a popular idiom that means something bad is about to happen. It comes from the Bible in Daniel chapter 5 and refers to a time when the supernatural hand of God wrote a cryptic message to a drunken Babylonian king named Belshazzar.

God is patient, but there comes a time when he says, “The party’s over!” He was about to strip the kingdom from the hands of a shameless and sacrilegious king who defied the God of Israel.

Presuming upon the Lord is always a dangerous thing to do. The best and only response to God’s writing on the wall is repentance, a complete change in direction.
