Picture two energetic sheepdogs that help the shepherd corral his flock. Sometimes the sheepdogs steer the sheep in the right direction. Sometimes they chase a straying sheep back to the flock, or spur the slow, lazy sheep forward from behind.

A good shepherd always needs a good pair of sheepdogs. Reflecting upon this pastoral scene, David, the shepherd boy who became king, writes poetically, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:6).

Our good shepherd’s mercy follows us as surely as His goodness does. He is faithful even when we are faithless. No matter how and where our shepherd leads us, we can always trust him to follow us with the sheepdogs of heaven.
