The Physiology of Worship
The physiology of muscle growth boils down to three things: muscle tension, muscle damage, and metabolic stress. In layman’s terms, the soreness you feel in your muscles the day after you went to the gym and lifted weights is a good thing.
Here’s why: your body is repairing and rebuilding your broken muscle fibers. The net result is bigger and more toned muscles. What is true physiologically is also true spiritually. The psalmist says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite spirit, O God, you will not despise” (Psalm 51:17).
The brokenness of spirit that leads to repentance is sometimes the only way God can build our worship muscle and prepare us for a new season of growth.
