“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).

Why the bread of life? Why not the filet mignon or the lobster cocktail of life? Bread is so commonplace, so ordinary. But that’s the point isn’t it? Jesus didn’t choose a food metaphor that appealed only to the elite members of society. He didn’t say, “I am the caviar of life.” On the contrary, He chose bread as a way of identifying with everyday people like you and me.

Whether you dine at Panera Bread or eat day-old bread from the local food shelter, Jesus is the bread that sustains your life and mine.
