The Book of Consolation
The President of the United States is both a commander-in-chief and a comforter-in-chief. Nobody did a better job of comforting the nation than President Abraham Lincoln who, after the Civil War, did his best to “bind up the nation’s wounds.”
Isaiah 40 begins, “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” The God of the Bible possesses an enormous capacity to soothe, console, and reassure His people. This is why the Jewish rabbis called Isaiah 40-66 “The Book of Consolation.”
After seven decades of harsh captivity under the ruthless Babylonians, jangled were the nerves of God’s chosen people. It was time to reverse their weary course and bring a spiritual salve to their souls. Do you need God’s comfort today?
