Neither Hot Nor Cold
The believers in the church at Laodicea had become dispassionate about Jesus and seemingly content with a tepid faith. Jesus called them lukewarm, “neither hot nor cold.”
Lukewarm Christians say things like, “Let’s not get too excited about things,” “There’s no need to get fanatical,” and “I don’t wear my religion on my sleeve.” They also sing lukewarm hymns like,
- Joyful, Joyful, We Kinda Like Thee
- Above Average is Thy Faithfulness
- My Hope is Built on Nothing Much
- I Surrender Some
To those who desire more than a lukewarm faith, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
