The Hebrew word nephesh (translated “soul’) encompasses the totality of our being—mind, body, spirit, and emotions. Thus, when our Good Shepherd restores our soul, He creates something new and something good, healing the intellectual, physical, spiritual, and emotional parts of us.

He begins by redeeming our soul eternally through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He also gets us out of the mess we got ourselves into. He cleans us up and binds our wounds. Finally, our Good Shepherd returns us to the flock from which we wandered and revitalizes the community of sheep.

What’s so good about the Good Shepherd? “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:8).
