God with Us
Of all the Christmas names of God, “Emmanuel” captures the essence of the holy child born in Bethlehem as much as any other. It is certainly the one we associate with Christmas first. Centuries apart, both the prophet Isaiah and the angel of the Lord called Him Emmanuel, which means, “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).
Look closely at the nativity and you will find both big and small. Emmanuel is bigger than the universe He created and yet small enough to fit inside Mary’s womb and arrive in a tiny hamlet called Bethlehem.
The greatest Christmas gift is God’s presence. By condescending to our humanity, God becomes accessible and larger than life at the same time.
