Getting Well
Travel back in time with me to the first century and to the city of Jerusalem. Near the sheep gate is a large pool with five patios around which “lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, waiting for the moving of the waters” (John 5:1-9). Can you see them? It’s a picture of lost hope.
Jesus arrives and says to a man who had been ill for thirty-eight years, “Do you want to get well?” What a strange question. Or was it?
Some people are quite comfortable in their illness. They’ve grown accustomed to the attention and might have even found a way to profit from it. What about you? Do you want to get well?
