Picture a shepherd with his sheep in green pastures and beside still waters. Imagine that same shepherd leading his flock along paths of righteousness and through the valley of the shadow of death to the summer grazing locations.

Upon arriving, imagine the shepherd’s flock turning to him, raising one hoof high into the sky, and saying with anointed heads and cups overflowing, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”

The word surely begins Psalm 23:6. This word sets forth the unbreakable bond between the shepherd and his sheep. The sheep know and trust their good and merciful shepherd; the shepherd conveys to his sheep a blessed assurance and confidence about the future, which is true for all who follow Jesus.
